Tata Sons has appointed former Turkish Airlines chairman Ilker Ayci as the new MD and CEO of Air India. This decision was taken in the meeting of the company's board held today. He will assume his responsibility from April 1. Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran also attended the board meeting. The board approved his name after due deliberation.
His joining is yet to be approved by all the regulatory bodies. Tata Group bought 100% stake in Air India for Rs 18,300 crore. The deal was completed on 27 January and from that day Tata Sons became its owner.
There is every possibility that Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran will be the new chairman of Air India. Also, its board may include group veteran Bhaskar Bhat, AirAsia CEO and officials close to the government. The Tata Group had bid for Air India in the name of Talace Ltd. According to officials, there is also a preparation to change its name. Talace Limited is a private limited company formed on 12 August 2020.
Through this, Tata Sons made a successful bid for Air India. Air India was established in 1932 as Tata Airlines. Later the government nationalized it. The government was trying to sell it for the last several years. Eventually it found a buyer in the form of Tata Sons, paving the way for the airline's homecoming.
Meanwhile, the board members of Air India have been asked to resign. According to media reports, the last meeting of the board of Air India will be held this month, after which the members can resign. 7 board members have been asked to resign. These include four functional directors, two government nominee directors, chairman and managing director. The board members were asked to resign in a meeting held on 15 November.
Tata Sons has relied on a foreign CEO to give new flight to Air India. Sources say that Tata Sons has shortlisted the CEO for Air India. The new CEO will be responsible for finalizing the management team of Air India. The holding company of the Tata Group has also shortlisted the names of members for the new board of Air India.
Aysi was born in 1971 in Istanbul. The 51-year-old is an alumnus of the 1994 batch of the Political Science and Public Administration Department of Bilkent University, Turkey. In 1995, he did a research project on political science at the University of Leeds, England. In 1997 he completed the International Relations Master's Program from Marmara University, Istanbul.
Tata has become the second largest airline in the country after the takeover of Tata Sons. Its entire share has been transferred to Tales Private Limited. After this Chandrasekaran said that we are very happy with this deal that Air India has come to the Tata Group. He had said that now we will work to make a world class airline.
Tata Sons currently has three airlines. This includes Air Asia, Vistara and Air India. The Tata group will also retain Air India's existing employees, which number around 8,500. Chandrasekaran said that IC is the leader of the aviation industry who led Turkish Airlines. We are delighted to have him join the Tata Group, where he will lead Air India.

We will harness the strong legacy of Air India and strive to make it the best airline in the world.” According to The Wall Street Journal, IC is a board member of the Turkish Football Federation, Turkish Airlines Sports Club and TFF Sportif Anonymous Sirketi. He is also a member of the Canadian Turkish Business Council and the US-Turkish Business Council.
The Tata Group, which recently bought the heavily indebted state-run airline company Air India, is likely to take over its reins in January 2022. According to sources, the new board of Air India will include officials from Tata Sons' M&A team, aviation experts from the group and a retired government official as independent director. Traditionally, the chairman of Tata Sons is the chairman of all the major operating companies of the group and there is every possibility that the same will be the case with Air India.
Air India and Air Asia are placed under Talace Ltd. The company is working out a plan for Air India's working capital requirements. An official said, “From January next year, Air India expenses for Tata will start. These include staff salaries, refurbishment of aircraft and quality control expenses.
The group's integration team includes executives from Air Asia India, TCS and Tata Steel. The team is preparing a plan for the marketing and branding of Air India and Tata Sons is in the process of making a presentation in this regard to the board officials. Handling employee unions is being handled by Tata Steel executives who have a good understanding of the matter.
