Healthy and Eco-Friendly Diapering Solutions

In an exclusive interview with IdeapreneurIndia Founder, Bdiapers founder Amrita Vaswani says 

Bdiapers is a hybrid diaper with a cloth shell that works with chemical-free disposable nappy-pads. These diapers come in a patented two-part pouch system that separates the “cloth” from the “diaper”. The disposable nappy pads are bleach, fragrance & dye free hence hypoallergenic and do not cause a rash.

IdeapreneurIndia - How your company started?

Amrita Vaswani - Bdiapers is a labour of love started by me, a mother of two boys and a passionate proponent of natural parenting. Having a child prone to rashes with commercial disposables, I was constantly looking for a rash free, leak proof diapering solution that did not break the bank. I was tired of the constant washing of cloth diapers and the organic diapers were too expensive for regular use. It was then that I started to work on a design of diaper that incorporated the health of cloth with the convenience of disposables, and one that was affordable, healthy and eco-friendly at the same time.

The company launched our first collection in May 2020. 

IdeapreneurIndia - What was the vision behind it?

Amrita Vaswani - The idea of a Hybrid Diaper came to me when I had my first baby in the US. I started the business in 2013 bringing the first Modern Cloth Diaper in India under the brand name “Bumchum”, but soon realized that mothers like myself were finding it difficult to commit to cloth diapers and the work that came with washing, airing, soaking them to keep them absorbent. I then started the design of Bdiapers with a home machine and a tailor and they launched the brand as Bdiapers in 2020; a patented design of a cloth cover with chemical free disposable inserts. 

The first lot of Bdiapers were made with matching T-shirts to make these a complete piece of clothing. I figured that babies up to 2 years of age were mostly in diapers and mostly at home so we wanted to ensure that babies were comfortable and looked cute all the same time. 

The core vision behind Bdiapers is to give moms the option to choose what they feel is comfortable and healthy for themselves and their babies. We want to incorporate the modern convenience in traditional products that are safe, affordable and eco-friendly. Our core belief is that every baby is different and we wish to be a part of every evolvedparents’ healthy parenting journey.

IdeapreneurIndia - Describe the services that you offer to your customers and in what way they are unique?

Amrita Vaswani - Bdiaper is India's first and only hybrid cloth diaper that can hold a disposable (or washable) insert. These work in a patented 3-part system with a cloth shell and a removable waterproof pouch that holds the insert pads (the actual diaper). The cloth shells are fit to size and are light weight while the waterproof pouch is soft and does not ‘crack’ like ordinary plastic. The cloth covers do not touch the baby hence do not need to be washed until soiled. The disposable inserts, which are the actual ‘diaper’ part is bleach, fragrance and dye free. They are made using plant cellulose making them hypoallergenic and completely safe for the baby. 

Bdiapers comes with matching T shirts, headbands and bandana bibs to complete the look, making your baby comfortable and stylish while being safe and healthy.

Bdiapers also has a range of, unique, healthy diapering solution which includes a silicone diaper clip (to avoid poking hazards of metal safety pins), a roll-on diaper balm (fingerless application) and a diaper Wash Spray (chemical free organic wasteless diaper wash solution).

IdeapreneurIndia - Difficulties which you have faced or you are facing.

Amrita Vaswani - Like every start up that has started operations this year, 2020 has been a challenging year for us as well. Since starting our store in May 2020, we have faced issues with factories closing down, losing good people and such hurdles. We have had to improvise, hustle and in a lot of places take the hit on the high prices of trims without compromising on quality. That said, the only challenge for us is to provide a leak proof, rash free diapering solution that does not break the bank. We ensure health for our little patrons as our upmost priority and each and every product is carefully designed keeping in mind their safety and convenience. 

IdeapreneurIndia - How your company is helping India to grow?

Amrita Vaswani - Here at Bdiapers we all love babies! Over time we want to create a community of like-minded mothers who are able to solve each other’s small problems that seem big, and are able to reassure each other of the great job they are all doing as mothers.The other aspect of giving back to my country is the fact that we are completely ‘made in India’. From the fabric to the disposables, we have moved our operations locally and our factories mostly employ mothers.  Over time we are looking at introducing diapers with Indian art forms like Chikan and Block printto revive some of this creativity that has gotten lost in the new age of fast fashion. We hope to promote our culture and our unique creativity from our diapers in the global market. 

IdeapreneurIndia - Message to entrepreneurs

Amrita Vaswani - My message would be mostly to momrpeneuers , as our challenges are slightly different from the mainstream , yet we all go through the same course of fear, anxiety and self-doubt. 

I am not in any position yet to give out advice however at Bdiapers the only thing that has kept us going through this year is the fact that we all love what we do, and whether we make it or not is not important as long as we enjoy the journey.
